London - It will come come as no surprise to their significant others.

But it seems the idea of British men being “style-challenged” is more than just a stereotype.

More than half confess that they rely on the women in their life to pick out their outfits for them for the next day.

So lacking are the country’s men in fashion know-how that one in four also resorts to asking their girlfriend or wife to shop for clothes for them.

And on the rare occasions they do choose their own outfits, half admit they still ask their partner or mother to “approve” the ensemble before they leave the house, the poll of 1,000 men found.

One in 20 even ask their mothers to shop for their latest gear.

The survey, by menswear brand Jacamo, also found when men are left alone with their wardrobe one in six admit they do not care about how they look and throw on any old item. One in three said they get dressed in less than two minutes.

A quarter said they ponder over an outfit for 20 minutes while one in 20 take more than an hour trying to figure out what they are going to wear.

When shopping for themselves, one in three pick their new clothes for comfort alone. Only nine percent will choose according to the latest trends.
