There are bound to be Pippa Middleton lookalikes at the Vodacom Durban July, local designer Suzy Mockridge has predicted.

Pippa, the sister of royal bride, Kate Middleton, stole headlines and hearts when, as the maid of honour, she sported a slinky ivory satin crepe, low-cut cowl-neck dress, designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, that showed off her slender figure.

With the theme of the Vodacom Durban July being a “Right Royal Affair”, Mockridge’s predictions about Pippa lookalikes might well prove correct.

She loves the theme and believes it lends itself to “an almost stylish, elegant direction”. As for the men, there are bound to be many who will turn up in three-piece suits.

Her advice for those who have not decided what to wear is to go for separates and layers, great if you want to get some wear out of them in the future.

Designer Kathrin Kidger says that some of her clients who usually choose sexy, edgy outfits for the Vodacom Durban July have grappled with the theme.

Many have opted for a well polished outfit with a great fascinator.

They have decided to incorporate sophisticated fabric into their outfits like lace, velour or brocade.

“For many, it is more about what they would wear to a royal wedding, rather than what they would wear as royalty. I think we will be seeing neater silhouettes,” she forecast.

Mockridge, Kidger and other big name designers – Colleen Eitzen, Leigh Schubert, David Tlale, Karen Monk Klijnstra and Rozanne Immerman – are involved in Friday night’s big fashion extravaganza at Gateway’s Wave House. 5fm’s DJ Fresh and his team will broadcast live at the Wave House from 3pm and doors close for the fashion show at 7pm. More than 4 000 people are expected to attend the free event.

This is the third year that Gateway – the country’s biggest shopping mall – has staged the fashion experience, which is its largest event of the year.

The idea is that it is a preview of what to expect at the big race the next day.

With millions of rand spent on race day outfits, malls around town are expecting to do brisk business from fashionistas on the hunt for that perfect race day outfit. - Daily News
