It might look like something out of a sci-fi film but at least no one at your party will be wearing the same outfit.

And this little black dress comes with a futuristic twist – lights that change colour based on your breathing. The garment incorporates a panel made from graphene, a ‘miracle material’ first discovered by Manchester University researchers.

Around 200 times stronger than steel yet incredibly flexible, graphene conducts electricity, meaning there is no need for wires. Sensors in the dress monitor how fast the wearer is breathing, and in response, LEDs woven into the fabric change colour – turquoise for deep inhalations and green for slow breaths.

Worn by Bethan Sowerby, a former Britain’s Next Top Model finalist, the garment was unveiled yesterday at the Trafford Centre in Manchester.

Its designer, Francesca Rosella, said: ‘The triangle in the bust area of the dress is made out of graphene, it conducts the electricity so that there are no wires needed in the dress to make it illuminate the different colours. ‘This dress is a glimpse of what graphene can do. If you have a material that is transparent, can conduct electricity, is very lightweight and can be used as a sensor, you can create clothing for sportswear use and even everyday clothing, but with a hi-tech twist.Graphene, discovered in 2004, is just one atom thick, making it a million times thinner than a human hair.
