New York - As a model and actress who has been the face of L’Oreal for more than two decades, she knows a thing or two about how to look her best.

Now, Andie MacDowell, 53, has shared her top tip for women past their half-centuries - ditch the short skirts.

In an interview on American television, the Four Weddings and a Funeral actress was asked for one piece of advice she would give to viewers.

She said: “No super short [skirts]. You’ve got to take the hems down, especially past 50. I don’t care how good your legs are.”

She added that women in their 50s should never wear tracksuit bottoms designed for teenagers. She said: “Women my age should not wear Juicy Couture sweatpants or anything that looks like junior high school.”

But MacDowell has come close to breaking her own rules several times.

At a screening of her romantic comedy Monte Carlo in New York last year, for example, she wore a smart navy dress that clearly fell above the knee. Her penchant for higher hemlines has been inherited by her daughters.

Rainey, 21, and Sarah Margaret, 17, MacDowell’s daughters from her marriage to model Paul Qualley, are regularly photographed showing off their admirable legs in short skirts or shorts.

MacDowell was a model in the 1980s before making the jump to acting and is best known for playing Carrie opposite Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral – a role for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. - Daily Mail
