Johannesburg – The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg show is back.

The event, a highlight on the fashion calendar, is a platform for designers to show off their autumn/ winter 2015 collections.

Seasoned designers will display their wares on the catwalk – but this year there is a surprise.

Nhlanhla Nciza, a member of the award-winning music group Mafikizolo, will hang up her microphone for a while and debut her designer collection.

From March 5 to March 7, collections from Ruald Rheeder, Stefania Morland, Suzaan Heyns, Fabiani, Khosi Nkosi, Tart, Augustine, Tsotetsi KL, Samantha Constable, Scalo and Shana, among others, will colour Melrose Arch in Joburg and appease fashionistas all around.

Sizwe Nzimande, the group marketing manager for African Fashion International (AFI), said: “Johannesburg has an energy and a buzz which has made it a centre of Afropolitan identity.

“As one of the world’s leading financial centres, it offers creative freedom to designers with the economic and commercial opportunities rarely available in African urban spaces.

“There is an exceptional collection of designers who will be showcasing their autumn/ winter designs, and it has become AFI’s number one objective to provide these designers with commercial viability.”

In its fifth year, AFI’s project Fastrack “curates and incubates young talent” and provides them with the opportunity and skills to become successful, sustainable designers and entrepreneurs.

“We are incredibly passionate about the Fastrack programme as it directly develops the new generation of fashion design talent and gives them a platform for success,” said Nzimande.

He added: “Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg provides a fashion podium to turn the international spotlight on local designers, recognising them as more than dressmakers and, rather, celebrating them as trendsetters.”
