Durban _ Fashion is constantly evolving and repeating itself.

That floral print bag your mother rocked in the eighties? It has made a comeback. Even her floral dresses and your grandmothers high waist denim shorts she wore in the 50s. They all made comebacks.

With the latest trend in fashion, designers are not reinventing a trend from yesteryear – they are drawing inspiration from the bedroom. Say hello to Pyjama Chic.

Sleepwear - as it is also referred to - is an approach in which designers embrace softer fabrics, looser cuts and athletics-inspired styles. Tops and bottoms are being designed using smooth silk with pajama-esque patterns as well as luxe, velvety slippers.

More fashion consumers are placing comfort above style, but merging the two ensures we can get the best of both worlds.

Durban based designer and stylist Lungile Mkhize said that although we are currently seeing an increase in sleepwear inspired designs, the trend itself isn’t new.

“This trend is definitely in, but we have seen it since 2012 when kimono tops first made an appearance on ramps everywhere.

Many people don’t know that it was the night gown that inspired it,” she said.

“I personally love this trend because it’s very easy to pull off and also very comfortable. I think that designers are listening to consumers and realise that people want to be comfortable while still looking good”, she said.

Mkhize also said the sleepwear trend is perfect for summer.

“With the fabrics being more breathable and the colours and prints so gorgeous, this trend is great for summer, from your slouchy pants to long line dresses”.

As with any trend there are “must haves”.

“For me, the oversized tank top, slouchy pants, the full shirt or long line dress and kimonos are an absolute must, they can all be dressed up or down.”

Here are her tips:

How to wear the trend

As with every trend, it’s important not to over do it. Do not try to wear everything at the same time. The key is to look chic, not like you’re ready for bed. A simple rule is if you are going for an oversized top, make sure you have a fitted bottom and vice versa.

Slouchy pants

You can wear these to the mall with a vest and pumps or even go the sporty route by pairing it with sneakers. If you are going out for drinks or dinner, put on a pair of heels, a tank top and a blazer and you are good to go.

Kimonos

These can go with just about anything. What’s hot right now are longer length kimonos with tassels.

For a day look, pair your kimono with denim shorts, a tank top or vest and gladiator sandals. You can go for a printed kimono or a neutral coloured one.

For a night look, wear skinny white jeans, a white tank top that’s either loose or fitted and a kimono. Finish off the look with a pair of stilettos.

Full line shirt dresses and slip dresses

The great thing about these dresses is that you don’t need to add anything else, you can wear them as it is. Some women do like to wear a small waist belt with their shirt dress for some added flair, but you don’t need to.

When it comes to slip dresses, look for printed viscose, bias cut lines and 100% cotton. Pair them up with gladiators during the day or boyfriend blazers and heels after dark.
