Durban -It’s an item of clothing that has been around for ages, but now it’s taken on a new look.
Some are calling it the ribbed cardigan, and others are calling it the open cardigan, while others have referred to it as the oversized cardigan. Here at SM we think that “long line cardigan” suits it perfectly.
That’s because the latest trend in men’s fashion is the classic cardigan that’s now been elongated, layered and designed to make any man who dares wear it look like a fashionista.
At first glance you might mistake the cardigan for a cape but after spotting them in local stores, we found that they come in different variations. We roped in some expert advice on this item that is for the “fashion forward, risk taking modern man”.
Durban fashion designer and stylist, Lungile Mkhize said, “This is a must have item this season, what’s really great about it is that these cardigans range from light to heavyweight for any kind of winter day.”
The very trendy long cardigan is an item that also fits in the ‘genderless’ box. “We are seeing a lot of unisex and genderless clothes. International fashion brand Zara was one of the big stores to introduce gender neutral collections which were a hit with customers and I think it’s absolutely fabulous that we are seeing more of this. I know to some it might sound strange, but how cool that partners can now share clothes without the obvious gender question coming into play,” said Mkhize.
How to wear it:
* According to Mkhize, your cardigan should finish your look off. “These cardigans are not for every guy out there, they are for a slim toned guy because they complement that structure.
* Never pair this cardigan with bootleg jeans, always have skinny jeans or straight leg jeans. “Its also great for a sports inspired look, go for dark tones with a pop of colour with your sneakers. You can’t go wrong with a pair of grey joggers and a long line cardi.” \[mandy.blankenberg\]she said.
* It's also very important to ensure that you have the perfect, “make sure your cardigan isn't tightly fitted; if you usually wear a size small, try a medium, that way it doesn't look like you are wearing your girlfriend's cardigan but if the slim fit look is one you are going for then by all means go for it. This type of cardigan is also a great accessory for the hobo chic look that Kanye West has made so famous and great for layering.
