Durban - Black has been a wardrobe staple for almost a century. Dressed up or down, it’s a head-turner, morning, noon and night.
It’s a winner at all major fashion weeks, and it added glamour to the red carpet at Cannes Festival this month.
Now, nine of Durban’s emerging fashion designers have been briefed to get creative with the colour, and will present their designs at a 50 Shades of Black fashion show at The Square Conference Centre, 250 uMhlanga Rocks Drive, on Saturday May 31.
Items featured will include executive menswear and womenswear, evening wear, swimwear, cocktail wear, a recycled category and some fabulous jewellery by Vijay Shah.
Designers showing are: Kathryn De Jesus, Kujula Mtambo, Meriska Gareeb, Thembeka Vilakazi, Yolandie Wessels, Sarojini Moodley, Quinton Naidoo and Jenine David.
The beauty of black is its versatility, says Moodley.
“It is a universal colour that extends to all cultures, religions, social backgrounds, age groups, male or female, different figures and forms, and it compliments all skin tones. Black is always on trend – it is timeless, classy and elegant.”
It can be brightened up with accessories too, says Wessels.
“Black looks great when combined with bright splashes of colour, whether with statement jewellery, matching garments, or just some bold and bright shoes,” she says. “You can wear black anywhere and for any occasion. When in doubt, wear black.”
The show will benefit the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society.
