Durban - David Tlale is often photographed on “his throne” – an office chair to rival all other office chairs and regularly makes headlines for pushing the conventional boundaries of the industry.
When he isn’t taking his clothes off for the media, he’s putting them on beautiful models for shows that must be extraordinary.
In 2011 he turned Nelson Mandela Bridge in Joburg into a catwalk for 92 models, symbolising the 92 years old Nelson Mandela was at the time.
The designer himself is often called “iconic”. He has an international reputation; having shown everywhere from Paris to, most recently, New York.
It’s Durban that he seems keen to captivate at present though – recently he staged the David Tlale Fashion Extravaganza at the Durban Botanical Gardens. The show, which included established Durban designers Lindiwe Kuzwayo and Andre Martin of the Life brand, also included rising star Zama Mathe’s Zarth label.
