Cape Town - Tomorrow I am having a hair cut, with wash and blow.

Today my hair needs a wash, but it's a cold morning, and why should I wash it when the lovely ladies in the salon will do it for me?

But it looks terrible.

My options in this hair dilemma have always been limited. Pretend it looks okay. Tie it up. Dry shampoo. Hide under the duvet. Wear an Alice band. All pretty unsatisfactory, you will agree.

This week, though, another option has presented itself. Social media is afire with doeks, and that got me thinking that I could just cover it all up with a doek. But... I have no idea how you do that. Somehow, I just never got the memo.

Luckily, there is a place to go where I can remedy my lack of knowledge, cover up the mess on my head and look more African, all in one go. So, an early morning YouTube hunt found me many helpful ideas.

There are still things I don't know - what's the best fabric to use? Best size of scarf? Does it all get itchy at the end of the day? With the help of the videos below, I am embarking on a new learning curve.

Here are four videos you could view if you too want a head wrap:

1. My personal favourite, because you don't even have to have a scarf - the T-shirt head wrap

2. Ideas if you have long hair (turn the volume down, the music is faintly irritating)

3. One very clear set of instructions on how to one beautiful wrap

4. How to tie a Nigerian gele (an easy one)
