Johannesburg - The delayed start of the bi-annual Soweto Fashion Week put a damper on the occasion.

The scheduled shows were supposed to start at 18:15 according to the programme made available on the website but by 8pm nothing had begun.

The official designers that were showcasing were NDK Studio, Row Handmade Accessories, Nokwakha, AfriBlossom and Precious Lulu Couture.

The NDK show started just after 8pm with a splash of five different cultures.

The designer brought a modern twist to siSwati wear making it street friendly with everyday looks for the youth.

The traditional King Mswati cloth was turned into chic street wear that included jumper dresses, hoodies, jackets and coats. For the Venda traditional attire, they brought even more colour to the bright fabric. Purple and yellow tutus with intricate beaded detail, capes, denim were all part of the collection. There were definite must have items for a traditional wedding on Our Perfect Wedding.

Designs also included seSotho chic wear with blazers and waistcoats, Tonga and Zulu traditional wear.

Highlight of the night was the entire women's wear collection from Nokwakha.

The talented designer showcased her menswear range at the opening party on Wednesday.

Nokwakha women's collection drew inspiration from her days when she had to sift through rubbish bins after her parents were retrenched.

Her garments were beautiful mint, blue and pink pastels that included pleated skirts, shift dresses, high waisted pants, form fitting knee length skirts and cardigans.

She paid attention to detail and used her trademark paper print on most of her looks.

Her collection was a stand out.

AfriBlossom showed off her confident plus size women's range that included day wear, work wear and all round fabulosity.

Precious Lulu Couture signed off the night with her evening wear collection.

Lots of lace, tassles and sequins. The range of cocktail dresses, corsets and the gold, bronze and turquoise colours added the glam to her collection.

Friday night is the second night of the fashion week. It runs until Saturday.
