Durban - Spring is nearly upon us and all the fashion gurus seem to agree that it is an exceptionally girlie season.
Most international forecasts point to peplums (frills), brocade, anglaise as well as other delicate fabrics in fondant colours, and trim, summer-ready bodies in outfits that reveal lots of leg and midriff.
Durban designers agree.
Bianca Warren, who stocks boutiques across SA and whose latest range is in a broad array of colours from navy to masala, mint and white, says dresses this spring are either flirty and flowy or fitted.
Young designer Tamryn Burger says more flowly, feminine clothes in chiffons and other soft fabrics are back in fashion.
“I’m inspired by hippie chic, that’s more chic. It’s about mixing and matching pieces, as well as pairing patterns and plains. I’ve also used neutral colours and florals, which remain big this season.”
Jane Wolff and Dale McCarthy, two of Durban’s most promising young designers, recently teamed up to form bridal boutique McCarthy Wolff Originals. Wolff says with an influx of ready-to-wear bridal dresses from the East, many brides are looking for individualised dresses that are unique.
“Hand-worked, texturised dresses that are a nod to design and high fashion are clearly in vogue. Spring brides shouldn’t shy away from a little colour, as this is on trend, too.”
