Durban - The South African Music Awards are set to take Durban by storm this weekend. Kamcilla Pillay spoke to local designer Jacqui Emmanuel about her fashion expectations on the red carpet.

Q: What colours do you think will be most common on the red carpet?

A: Printed nude mesh.

With Pinterest and Instagram being major influencers on the social fashion scene, one can definitely look out for “Lil Kim” mimics with printed bodysuits and pure silk circle skirts. I will also be on the lookout for red, black and emerald, strong on the runway.

Q: Are there specific trends that will be visible at the awards?

A: Print on print is big, as well as three-dimensional applique. Laser cutting and furs will definitely be popular as well.

Q: What do you think are the “must-haves” for the show - accessories, ensembles?

A: A faux fur stole or gilet is huge for both men and women. It spices up a simple look. Also, add another element with a crystal brooch. In shoes, look out for round high heels. And let's hope to see high fashion sportsluxe pieces from the truly daring. Think Versace meets Dsquared2.

Q: What are the absolute “no-nos”?

A: I'm so tired of seeing lace on mesh gowns, yellow dresses and Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad rip-offs. Stay away from ball gowns and overly flamboyant sparkle and lace!
