London - Jogging in your sixties and seventies could help slow down the ageing process, a study has found.

US researchers looked at the amount of energy expended by men and women who had stayed fit and active into their late sixties and early seventies. Half of them went for regular runs while the other half walked for at least half an hour three times a week or more.

They found that on a treadmill, the people who walked regularly expended just as much energy as a senior citizen who did no exercise – despite being fitter. They used up around 22 percent more energy than people in their twenties.

But they found that the regular runners expended far less energy when walking on a treadmill – and found the task just as easy as 20-somethings. The study, published in journal PLOS ONE, said the runners may have benefited from changes to their muscles that make them more energy efficient.

University of Colorado Boulder researcher Rodger Kram said: “The bottom line is that running keeps you younger, and allows older individuals to move more easily, improving their independence and quality of life.” - Daily Mail
