We spend 6 years sitting down at work

London - It may feel as though we’re rushed off our feet during our working day – but we actually spend at least five hours of it sitting down, a study has revealed.

That adds up to an astonishing 50 400 hours, or almost six years, over our working lifetime.

On average, we are in the office for 240 days a year and in our seats for 1 200 hours in that time, the poll of 1 000 British workers found.

But despite spending so much time sitting down, we find our jobs anything but relaxing. Some 70 percent feel high levels of stress at work and more than half say they experience anxiety and panic before they even get to the office.

And the daily commute does little to help, with 28 percent feeling stressed and 15 percent getting angry during the journey to work.

More than a third believe they could reduce stress by walking to the office – but one in five say it takes too long, one in six insist the poor British weather stops them and six percent simply want longer in bed.

Gareth Jones of health monitoring firm Fitbit, which carried out the study, said: “Including a walk during your working day can help alleviate the strain, helping people feel fitter and healthier in the process.” - Daily Mail
