London - Men barred from eating crisps and chocolate at home are sending sales soaring by secretly gorging themselves when they are out.

According to research they are tucking into a hefty 41 percent more crisps outside the home than a year ago, while consumption of chocolate is up by 37 percent among men aged 35 to 44.

Wives and partners looking to improve the health of their loved ones by cutting back on unhealthy snacks are responsible for a seven percent drop in the amount of crisps eaten at home by 35 to 44-year-old men.

But despite these well-meaning efforts, many men are simply getting their fix while on the go.

The trend has contributed to an overall 23 percent increase in out-of-home chocolate consumption by all UK men, although crisp consumption has fallen by three percent.

Ross McKnight, an analyst at market research firm Kantar Worldpanel, told trade magazine The Grocer that men in their mid 30s and 40s were more likely than other age groups to live in a household with children.

As a result they would often cut out a food if it was no longer available at home.

“However, it appears that men are now sourcing their fix of crisps and chocolate out of the home,” Mr McKnight told the magazine.

Their partners, on the other hand, are more restrained according to the Kantar Worldpanel research.
