Which juices can give you a boost? Try these...

ACHING MUSCLES: Beetroot

CYCLISTS were 45 seconds faster over ten miles after drinking half a litre of beetroot juice, found researchers at Exeter University. The juice is rich in nitrite, which widens blood vessels, improving circulation and the supply of oxygen to the muscles.

PROSTATE CANCER: Pomegranate

IT IS packed with a plant chemical called ellagic acid, which encourages rogue cells to self-destruct. In men with prostate cancer, it took three years longer for prostate-specific antigen - a marker of the cancer’s progression - to double if they drank juice daily.

OVERWEIGHT: Grapefruit

A US study of 100 obese people found those who ate or drank grapefruit before meals for 12 weeks lost 3½ lb (about 1.6kg) more than a control group. Experts say an antioxidant called naringenin, found in grapefruit, lowers insulin, which may reduce hunger and the rate fat is laid down.

SUN DAMAGE: Tomato

LYCOPENE, the antioxidant that makes tomatoes red, mops up damaging free radicals created in the skin by sunlight. Manchester researchers found people who ate 5 tbsp tomato paste daily had less reddening of the skin (a first sign of damage) after sun exposure. You get the same amount of lycopene in a 200ml glass of tomato juice. - Daily Mail
