Bubbly Uraysha Ramrachia celebrates this years Mercury Wine Week, secure in the knowledge that the event, being held at Durbans Suncoast from August 15-17, will afford her plenty of opportunities to taste a whole range of wines.
South Africa is the eighth largest producer of wines in the world.
According to Platter’s South African Wines 2012, SA has 573 wineries and consumers drink an average seven litres of wine a year – so it is welcome news that KZN wine lovers again have a leading event where they can taste new wines or rediscover old favourites.
This year’s Mercury Wine Week celebrates 34 years as the premier platform from which winemakers and estates have brought their latest vintages and new experiences to the local market.
It has become the showcase to bring the Cape to Durban, and between August 15 and 17, the Suncoast marquee will play host to award-winning winemakers, vintages and varietals.
Nearly 900 wines will be on display, from palate-cleansing méthode cap classiques to robust reds and body-warming ports and sherries.
There will be old favourites like Steenberg, Simonsvlei, Nederburg and Zevenwacht, but also relative newcomers in Bosman Family Vineyards, Lovane Boutique Wine Estate, Kleine Zalze, Cederberg and Tokara.
Shoprite Checkers will again bedazzle with its Odd Bins range, its popular in-house selection for which wine buyer Stephanus Eksteen says he “dabbles a bit here and there” as “people have faith in the brand”.
Woolworths will return with buying manager Ivan Oertle offering a range of treasure from his local and international finds.
* Tickets at R100 can be bought via Computicket or at the door. Doors open at 5.30pm.
