Another Durban mall has been struck by robbers – this time for gaming consoles.

Police confirmed that a case of burglary at a business premises and armed robbery was being investigated by Durban North SAPS in Umhlanga – where the mall is also situated – on Thursday.

“It is alleged this morning at 5 am, a security guard was performing his duties when he was approached by three armed suspects who demanded his firearm before handcuffing him,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane in response to The Mercury’s queries.

He said they broke the door at a business premises, took four playstations, cash, cellphones and the firearm belonging to a security guard.

“There were no injuries reported. Our task team is working around the clock in tracing the suspects.”

This week, the leader of one of the gangs responsible for many mall robberies in KwaZulu-Natal had been arrested following an intelligence-driven operation by various police units.

Two suspects were nabbed in total in the operation.

One of them had been positively linked to at least three mall robberies while the second suspect was found in possession of goods taken during a fourth robbery.
