An off-duty policeman has been killed in a shooting incident in Glenwood, Durban.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said Constable Ayanda Hopewell Myeni, 33, was visiting his brother in Bonamour Avenue, Glenwood, on Wednesday night at 7.30pm when he came under fire.

Mbhele said Myeni was found lying on the ground next to his vehicle, a white VW POLO and was certified dead at the scene by paramedics. He had been shot in the upper chest and lower abdomen. Myeni was stationed at Vryheid SAPS.

Mbhele said a case of murder was being investigated by Umbilo SAPS.

A local resident told The Mercury that she had heard shots go off and later sent a picture of a crowd gathered in the street.

Another community member, Heather Hayward Rorick, said on Facebook: “Our patrollers helping out in reflector jackets. We circled around the grieving family and together with members of the community held hands and prayed for this family and for the departed Police member.”

Mbhele said the motive for the killing and the suspects were unknown at this stage.

Police are appealing to anyone who might have information to contact the local police station or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
