Three people were injured in an industrial fire on Tuesday afternoon, emergency authorities said.

Garrith Jamieson, spokesman for the medical service Rescue Care, said the incident had taken place in Teakwood Road in Jacobs.

Initial reports said that a building had caught alight but, after arriving at the scene, medical and other emergency personnel noted that it had been an isotainer (which is a specialised unit used to transport dangerous and toxic substances) which had been engulfed in flames.

One person sustained burns to his hands and face, while another sustained slight burns to his body.

The third person injured had been hit by a truck when he attempted to avoid the fire.

Several bodies – including the SA Police Services and the eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services – worked together to contain and extinguish the fire.

The injured were transported to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
