Advanced 4x4 course not for sissies

Pretoria - The Isuzu Off-Road Academy, launched in 2010 to help existing and potential customers get the most out of their all-wheel drive Isuzus, is expanding its off-road driver training to include a tougher and more comprehensive two-day Advanced 4x4 Driving Course.

Lead instructor Grant McCleery explained: “We've had numerous requests from people who have done basic 4x4 training for a longer, more challenging module, so we've put together a two-day advanced off-road driving course that will provide more intensive training for experienced drivers and off-road enthusiasts.”

An academy student nears the top of a seriously steep climb.Easy to see why this diff-lock exercise is called The Twister.Even a 4x4 will get out of shape when pushed hard on the skip-pan.

The new course includes vehicle recovery, mechanical knowledge, correct vehicle packing procedures, driving and towing techniques with trailers and caravans - all in an intense two-day course which complements the existing one-day course, which covers 4x4 orientation and basic off-road driving techniques.

Based primarily at the Gerotek test facility west of Pretoria, the academy can also train candidates anywhere in South Africa, even travelling into neighbouring countries where training is a vital tool for the safety and wellbeing of both the people who drive off-road vehicles, as well as the environments in which they operate.

McCleery said: “Since we started the academy in 2010, we've successfully trained almost 3000 4x4 enthusiasts, who now have a better understanding of how their vehicles work and how to make best use of their capabilities.

All three of the academy's instructors - Grant McCleery, Fanus Kruger and Marius van Vuuren - hold South Africa Qualification Authority certification as 4x4 driving instructors.

The academy is also an accredited advanced driver training institution, and all successful candidates are issued with a certificate upon completion of the course.

Isuzu brand manager Mlungisi Nonkonyana said: “The knowledge and experience gained through the academy is vital to the safe operation of any 4x4 vehicle off the beaten track, where vehicle preparation, driver education and environmental knowledge are key factors for safe journeys.

“The new, extended programme will provide a challenging and more practical set-up, producing safer and more experienced drivers.”
