Body-on-frame SUV will take on the Fortuner when it arrives in South Africa before year-end.
Chevrolet has just announced that its all-new Trailblazer SUV will reach our shores before this year is out.
Rearing to break the Toyota Fortuner's stranglehold of the bakkie-based-SUV market, the Trailblazer comes to the party with tough American-truck-like styling - it is based on the Chevy Colorado bakkie after all (although that one is not headed our way).
While the actual production version of the Trailblazer has yet to be revealed, the concept car you see here should be the spitting image of the final product, barring a few minor details, of course.
Like the Colorado, the Trailblazer will be powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine which is likely to match the bakkie's outputs of 132kW and 470Nm. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual and six-speed automatic.
IT’S A TOUGHIE
While endowed with enough grunt to hold its own on the open road, it won't be any sissy when you show it mud, its chassis tuned to allow heady-duty off-roading.
Practical too, the Trailblazer's cabin provides space for seven occupants and claims to offer the most spacious third-row in its class. The seats also offer tumble and fold-flat versatility.
That's as much as we can tell you for now - GMSA will, of course, announce the model line-up and pricing closer to the time of launch.

X fortuner now Chev, wrote
I traded my Fortuner for a low spec Chevy captiva and I don’t regard every minute I drive captiva. Toyota rip us off. The only thing I don’t have and I never used on fortuner is a cruise control. I've bluetooth, rear parking sensors standard with Toyota you need to pay extra R10k. My worry was the service plan comparison; fortuner=5yrs 90000km while Chevy=3yrs 60000km but warranty, fortuner=3yrs 100000km while Chevy=5yrs 120000km. I hope with this new model they can sort their service plan to 5yr 100000km. that will take fortuner off the undeserving top spot.

Besides the product - to take on Toyota in Southern Africa you need a commited larger tip top quality Dealer Network. And you need continuity and commitment for reputation building. GM cannot just come and go as their fancy takes them. before they left SA they had a top seller in the Chev 4 100-3 800-2 500 series and Opel before that.

One thing is for sure the name will still be Chev and not TOYOTA that is a big bid difference

Love it or hate it, I bet the Fortuner will still outsell any other SUV in it's segment for many years to come. Toyota's got as winner with this one and the Hilux. I wish I could afford one :(

LMAO - quality????? Do you own one???? My Fortuner cost approx R30K to keep it on the road just when the warrantee expired. Clutch (known problem), Injectors, etc etc ETC. I thought I will give it another chance - my NEW one has got a propshaft issue apparently (or tyres) - at 5000 km?????!!!!!

Toyota`s are the most bland cars on the road today, reliable maybe, but boring and the Fortuner is the biggest safety risk i.t.o theft and highjackings. BTW, Do the Fortuners still fall over (is this the purpose for the ski`s on their roof) when towing anything bigger than a venter trailer? This chevy looks great better than a Fortuner anyday.

The decider between this car and the Fortuner will be off-road ability. To me it looks like a better pimped Fortuner.

It will never come close to the Toyota. Chevies don't have the same quality, unless you get the really big transporters.
