If you're looking for a traditional SUV without spending a fortune then you've either got Indian or Chinese on the menu.

To that end, the Indian-built Mahindra Scorpio has always been among the cheapest options and now it's become even more affordable with the introduction of a 2.2-litre turbocharged petrol model.

Undercutting the most affordable diesel model by R20 000, the rear-wheel drive Scorpio's 2.2-litre mHawk petrol engine was developed in a joint venture with powertrain specialist AVL of Austria.

The fact that it was developed from Mahindra's 2.2-litre diesel motor is evident in its low-revving nature - the new petrol motor develops 115kW at 4500rpm and 280Nm of twist between 1800 and 3000rpm.

Practical and well-equipped, the Scorpio boasts three rows of seats that can carry up to seven occupants and comfort features comprise air conditioning, power windows, cruise control and a multi-function steering wheel.

Safety kit includes dual front airbags and ABS brakes, but given its old-fashioned underpinnings, tall centre of gravity and rear-wheel propulsion, the lack of any form of traction control is of concern.

It does offer some protection for your wallet though, with a three-year/60 000km service plan being standard, along with a three-year/100 000km warranty. Service intervals are pegged at 10 000km.
