Olives, wine and a whole lot of trail-blazing

On the weekend of May 14-15, the Cape Land Rover Club had an outing to the Wild Olive 4X4 Eco Track and Bontebok Ridge Reserve. The event was only for owners of Series vehicles - vehicles made between 1957 and 1977.

The group of 15 vehicles met at the Winelands One-Stop on the N1 on Saturday morning, and took a leisurely drive in convoy to the track. As usual, the occupants of other vehicles on the road waved in amazement at this sight.

We set up camp on arrival at the farm. A drivers' meeting was held and then we tackled the first part of the trail.

The route consisted of obstacles made from clay and logs, with the logs catching out some of the vehicles by snagging on their chassis cross-members.

As always there was immense camaraderie among all the participants.

Everyone headed to the lapa after finishing the first part of the trail.

Some went on a game drive while others stayed behind to enjoy the serenity of the location while tucking into snacks and wine. This made for a splendid evening after a great day's drive.

Those returning from the game drive commented on the spectacular view from the slopes of the Lemietberg. There were zebra, bontebok, springbok, wildebeest and eland spread out on the plains before them with Table Mountain in the distance.

On Sunday we completed the second part of the trail, once again a compilation of natural and man-made obstacles.

The trail wound its way through wild olive trees that were over 100 years old. Obstacles included dongas and slide slopes, and even a mud pit.

Some went through rather easily while others spluttered and smoked their way to the other side.

All too soon it was time to return home for some, while others drove other trails in the mountain.

Many thanks to the Turners who ensured our stay was a memorable one. The trail is open only to clubs and guided tours. For further information about the Cape Land Rover Club telephone Werner Lotter at 082 491 4890.
