As they say in Pofadder, bakkies is not big in Europe, even when they're built by Europe's leading automaker.
So, after Volkswagen caused a stir at the Geneva motor show in March with the Amarok Canyon concept, “designed for extreme outdoor sports”, they decided to produce a limited-edition Amarok incorporating all the key elements of the Geneva show car - including the strong colour scheme, all-terrain, lightbar, styling bar and interior fitting details - to put some pizzazz in the European pick-up market.
The production Canyon is based on the Trendline specification, but with special copper-orange metallic paint (available only on this model), darkened tail-light clusters, special undercarriage guards in body colour, black wheel-arch trims and special badging.
The redesigned styling bar, sill sidebars and rear bumper are finished in gloss black as a conscious contrast to the vehicle body, as is the tonneau cover.
A lightbar with four additional headlights is an optional extra.
The Canyon will be available in Europe with a choice of 90 or 120kW, two-litre turbodiesels, each with 4Motion permanent or on-demand all-wheel drive and optional differential lock on the rear axle. It runs on special 17” 'Roca' alloy rims shod with 245/70 all-terrain tyres - although 18” rims with road rubber are also available.
Inside, the partially leather seats have two-tone upholstery, with the seat bases in mid-grey and the side bolsters in dark grey.
Decorative stitching on the seats, the three-spoke leather steering wheel and the leather-covered gear lever picks up the coppery body colour, while the instrument panel's sun visor is finished in contrasting matt chrome.
In addition to being available in the special copper orange colour, the Canyon will also be available in Europe, from early in 2013, in metallic silver, grey and beige, with the option of a colour-matched canopy, which replaces the styling bar and tonneau cover.
Sadly, there are no plans at present to release the Amarok Canyon in South Africa.
