Is this the most insane quad ever?

This is the Wazuma V8F (no, Mr President, we're not kidding), brainchild of French engineer Ludovic Lazareth, and we are thankful to say it is the only one in existence.

The F in its title stands for Ferrari: in the middle of this monster there's a 185kW, three-litre Maranello V8, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed, push-button-shift transmission borrowed from a BMW M3.

The whole thing weighs only 650kg, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of almost 285kW per tonne. Lazareth doesn't quote any performance figures - partly, we suspect, to steer clear of lawsuits, and partly because he has enough sense of self-preservation not to try.

Geometrically speaking, it is more akin to a Can-Am Spyder than a true quad - although, given that the Spyder has some stability issue of its own, that may not a recommendation.

Lazareth's reasoning makes sense, however; by having the rear 315/30 R18 gumballs almost touching, the Wazuma doesn't need a differential and lays down all its power through a siamesed contact patch the size of Julius Malema's ego.

The 18” front Momo (+Power) rims wear 285/30 tackies, brake-down is entrusted to 324mm ventilated discs and Brembo callipers and the custom-built suspension is by EMC, with Formula One-style bell-cranks and laydown shocks all round.

The Wazuma V8F is for sale on Jameslist for €200 000 (R2.13 million); sadly, it's not street legal (it runs on slicks and has no silencers worth mentioning!) - not that it would make any difference in South Africa.

IOL Motoring's resident biker, Dave Abrahams, says he'd like to give the Wazuma a blast down the main runway at Upington, just once - just to be able to say he's done it - but he's not prepared to sell his house for the privilege.
