Nokia and Garmin have combined forces to launch a portable Bluetooth GPS navigation solution for cell phones.

Nokia multimedia manager Henri Mattila said: "Mobile navigation means a new era of convenience for the traveller, whether they are navigating the dusty roads of Lesotho or the urban jungles of Sandton."

Users can easily navigate to a specific street address or search millions of points of interest such as hotels, restaurants, shopping and tourist attractions.

The Garmin Mobile XT software automatically calculates the fastest route to a selected destination and provides voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions along the way while showing a 3D moving map on the cellphone.

If a driver strays off course, it will automatically calculate the quickest way to get back on track.

Mattila said: "At Nokia we see navigation technology changing the functionality of cellphones the way camera and internet access has."

Garmin marketing manager Jason Theunissen added: "GPS is becoming a part of consumers' everyday lives and if you can integrate the functionality into a cellphone the benefits become even more convenient."

The GPS 10x Bluetooth enabled GPS receiver has a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery that provides up to 22 hours of continuous use and can be recharged with the included 12-volt car adapter.

The battery is removable and is interchangeable with Nokia batteries for maximum flexibility.

It will be bundled with selected Nokia N-series multimedia handsets on certain contract offerings. You can also buy the GPS 10x and the software separately for use with compatible Nokia handsets, including the 6680, 3250 and the new E-series range.
