Triumph SA is recalling more than 400 Tiger Explorer, Tiger Explorer XC and Trophy models in South Africa to replace their engine control units as a safety measure.

The problem, part of a worldwide recall of these models, is apparently caused by an incompatiblity between the ECU and the fuelling system that causes the bike to hit its own panic button for no good reason, shutting down both fuelling and ignition systems.

THREE CASES IN SOUTH AFRICA

There have so far been only three reported cases in South Africa, and usually it's possible to restart the bike in one of three get-you-home 'limp' modes programmed into the system.

Nevertheless, if it happens in the middle of a busy intersection or on a freeway off-ramp it could cause a 'fresh underwear moment' - which is why Triumph distributor KMSA is treating this recall as a matter of urgency.

Owners of the bikes concerned are asked to contact their Triumph dealers and set up an appointment to have the ECU replaced and the new module set up on the diagnostic computer, which should take about an hour and will be carried out free of charge.
