Audi's A1 has just grown horns with the introduction of a sporty 1.4-litre TFSI derivative.

Visually, it adds an S line body kit and 17” alloys to the chunky single-frame grille, arching roof and flat C pillar of the standard A1.

But it's what under the wrap-around bonnet that's important - a compact, lightweight 16-valve engine rated at 136kW and 250Nm, for which Audi quotes 0-100km in 6.9sec and a top speed of 227km/h.

A combination of supercharger and turbocharger induction gives it instantaneous response and top-end power, says Audi, at a cost of only 5.9 litres/100km and 139g/km. A seven-speed Stronic dual-clutch transmission, with a tall seventh gear for economical cruising, drives the front wheels.

Standard kit includes the Ambition equipment package plus auto aircon, black headlining and an LED interior light package, at R312 000, including a five-year or 100 000km maintenance plan.
