Chevrolet's Korean-built Captiva seven-seat SUV has been given a thorough makeover and it's not just a bold new face and a few interior tweaks we're talking of here - engineers have also tinkered under the bonnet and with the chassis and sound deadening.

Though GMSA claims this to be such a significant upgrade that it's practically an all-new vehicle, designers have hardly touched the side and rear sheet metal - but the front end is a completely new chapter.

Here the Captiva gets a much bigger grille in similar vein to the imminent new Aveo, while more angular headlights complete what is undoubtedly a far more aggressive appearance.

GM has also commissioned two more powerful petrol engines to go with the more aggro face.

At the bottom end, a new 2.4-litre, variable-valve-timed Ecotec petrol engine replaces the previous unit of the same size, but outputs have risen from 100kW to 123kW and from 220Nm to 230Nm. Claimed combined cycle fuel consumption is pegged at 8.8 l/100km for the front-wheel drive version.

Meanwhile, the flagship 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine has been replaced by a new 3-litre unit with direct injection and outputs of 190kW and 288Nm (up from 169kW, down from 297Nm). This version drinks 10.6 l/100km.

Sadly there is no turbodiesel version at this stage but GM promises to introduce a 2.2-litre oil burner later this year.

Technical changes on the Captiva also extend to the chassis, with numerous hardware and software changes designed to improve the ride/handling balance.

On the electronics front, the Regulated Voltage Control system is said to improve the efficiency of the electrical system via smart coordination of devices.

Finally, inside the cabin, this SUV gets new seat materials and various décor appointments aimed at imparting a more upmarket feel, and it's also more functional in some respects - with a new instrument cluster, more effective cabin ventilation and repositioned front seat controls. Even the cup holders haven't escaped the heavy hand of advancement.

As for specification, all models are now equipped with an MP3-compatible eight-speaker sound system with a 6CD front loader, Bluetooth connectivity and aux input. There's also an electronic park brake and hill holder.
