Paris - A classic Ferrari has become the world’s most expensive race car after it was sold for 32.1 million euro (R570.7m).

Only four of the Ferrari 335 S Spider Scagliettis were ever built, with this particular example having been raced around the world by the likes of Stirling Moss.

The sports car left the workshop in 1957, and that year it came second in the Mille Miglia, a daunting 1000-mile road race in Italy, before competing in the legendary 24-hour Le Mans - though it failed to finish.

The car was bought by French collector and racing driver Pierre Bardinon in 1970 and remained part of the family’s collection until this week. Mr Bardinon passed away in 2012 and the family was told to sell the car at auction to settle an inheritance tax bill.

After intense bidding at the Artcurial sale in Paris on Sunday, the hammer eventually went down at 28 million euros to an unknown buyer. Including premiums and taxes, the final price for the non-road-legal racing machine was R32.1 million euro.

However, this was still not the most expensive Ferrari ever sold, that honour going to a road-legal 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta that fetched $38.1bn in California back in 2014.
