Maranello, Italy - If you think you've never seen a Ferrari like this one - spotted at the third annual Ferrari Cavalcade in Sicily - you're absolutely right.

Based on the F12berlinetta, the F12 TRS is a one-off custom design developed at a client's request by Flavio Manzoni and the Ferrari Style Centre team as an extreme, two-seater, open-top sports barchetta.

It has the same 6262cc V12 as the F12berlinetta, rated at 545kW and 690Nm, and the same quoted performance figures - 0-100 in 3.1 seconds and 0-200 in 8.1.

One of initial inspirations for the project was the 1957 250 Testa Rossa - hence the name - but this is no retro tribute car. The nose is short and sharp, reminiscent of the 355, while a low, wraparound windscreen forms a long dark band of glass in contrast to the red of the body.

CHOPPED-OFF TAIL

The V12 engine's signature red cylinder heads are visible through a window in the bonnet, and the rear three-quarter section has been refined to run all the way from where the A pillar would be, if this car had one, to the chopped-off tail, while the rear treatment is defined by the long fuselage fairings running behind the headrests into the rear spoiler.

The cockpit is pared back to the barest driving essentials, with just basic controls for accessories such as air-conditioning, and there are no mats, window controls, central air vents oddments trays, glove compartment or audio system.

SPECIAL PAINT

It's trimmed mostly in carbon fibre and alcantara synthetic suede, with body-colour paint on the door panels, the centre console and the smooth ramp that runs from the central tunnel to the rear deck, as on the 1957 Chev Corvette.

Even the paint is special; at first glance, or in shadow, it looks like the familiar Ferrari Rosso Corsa, but direct lighting shows up the multilayered effect, with microscopic flakes of mica.
