Detroit Motor Show - Ford has given its US-spec Fusion a small nip and tuck, but the real exciting news here is the addition of a potent new range-topper.

Powering the V6 Sport is a 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 petrol engine with two turbos and "projected" outputs of 242kW and 475Nm. Ford says it was engineered to leave other family sedans in the dust but it even invades sports sedan territory, given that it's slightly more powerful than the BMW 340i and just 3kW shy of the current-generation Audi S4.

Thankfully Ford hasn't tried to shove all of that power through the front wheels as the V6 Sport has an all-wheel drive transmission, and its dynamic talent is further backed up by continuously-controlled adaptive damping.

We're quite surprised that Ford didn't make this an ST version but perhaps that badge is being saved for something even more potent, or Ford is simply vying for a more mature buyer who wants sporty performance in a more 'grown-up' package. That would also explain why the V6 Sport still looks like quite a sleeper despite being distinguished by a gloss black mesh grille, deeper air intakes and a rear spoiler.

Sadly, Ford South Africa currently has no plans to bring the V6 Sport to South Africa, at least not this year, but it certainly can't be completely ruled out for introduction at a later stage. Ford fans hold thumbs.
