Johannesburg - Not inspired by an REM album cover, but rather a need for a more affordable self-shifting city car, Hyundai has launched an automatic for the people.
Based on the entry-level 1.1-litre Motion model, the new derivative is fitted with a four-speed automatic gearbox and is aimed at city dwellers that prioritise easy commuting over performance.
Its 1.1-litre four-cylinder eight-valve motor produces 50kW at 5500rpm and 99Nm at 4500rpm. 0-100km/h takes a leisurely 17.1 seconds at the coast and the tops speed is just 146km/h, but there is an economy bonus as Hyundai claims a fuel consumption figure of just 5.7 litres per 100km.
As far as creature comforts go, the 1.1 Motion is relatively well kitted, with air conditioning, a CD/MP3 audio system with steering wheel controls, Bluetooth connectivity, electric windows all round and electrically adjustable and heated mirrors. On the safety front, a driver's airbag is fitted, but ABS braking is not part of the deal.
The new 1.1 Motion automatic costs R129 900, which includes a five-year/150 000km warranty and the equivalent roadside assistance.
The only cheaper automatic option on the market is the Cherry QQ3 1.1 TXE auto (at R115 900), and we don't think you want to go there, while the next most affordable option is Kia's Picanto 1.0 EX AT, at R139 995.
On another note, Hyundai is set to launch its Grand i10 early next month - which is a bigger and completely new vehicle that will plug the gap left by the Getz. The current i10 range is expected to soldier on as Hyundai's entry-level range.
