The GT Concept could become the first rear-wheel drive Kia, but it may not be alone.

The cybergarage is buzzing with rumours that Kia's GT Concept is going to become the company's first rear-wheel drive production car - possibly as soon as 2013.

The concept (first seen at the Frankfurt show in September) had a 3.3-litre turbocharged V6 engine delivering 288kW and 534Nm, with an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels - which would put it on a direct collision course with Lexus and the European autocrats.

According to Inside Line, Kia insiders see the GT as a “more affordable alternative” to the Audi A5 and A7.

But wait, as they say, there's more. The same insiders are apparently saying that Kia is hoping to spread the development costs and widen the car's appeal with an even sportier, two-door version and a swanky estate, all sharing a platform with a comparable Hyundai model, possibly the Genesis sedan.

There's no word on when the coupé and estate will appaear, but knowing the Koreans' ability to develop more than one model at the same time on the same platform, they won't be far behind the sedan.

I cannot fathom how a world struggling under financial problems, brings out hundreds of new models ( many of them almost identical ) per year!
