We're not of the opinion that Mercedes-AMG's reincarnated Gullwing was really missing much in the way of performance or dynamic ability, but then who are we to argue when Affalterbach's men in white coats decide to up the ante?

Enter the SLS AMG GT - not only have AMG's techies tinkered under the bonnet, but they've also improved the chassis, while designers made minor alterations to the styling.

STEROID INJECTION

An increase in peak pressure and some in-engine dethrottling measures have increased the power output of AMG's 6.3-litre front-mid-mounted engine from 420kW to 435kW at 6800rpm and maximum torque remains at 650Nm at 4750rpm. This reportedly cuts the zero to 100km/h sprint time by 0.1 seconds to 3.7 and the electronically limited top speed is 320km/h. As before, its official gas guzzling statistic stands at 13.2 l/100km on the combined cycle.

The company also claims to have reduced the manual-mode reaction time of its seven-speed Speedshift DCT sports transmission, which can be controlled via steering wheel paddles. And if you thought the standard SLS was music to your ears, consider that the automatic double-declutching function on the GT is now more pronounced.

More dynamic but inevitably less comfortable, the GT's AMG adaptable Ride Control sports suspension system has been modified with stiffer springs and shocks and the system's 'comfort mode' has been done away with. Drivers can still choose between 'sport' and 'sport plus' modes.

IT'S GOT THE LOOK

Subtle styling tweaks mean GT owners will be able to stand apart from those commoners in standard SLS models even if these mods are limited to darkened headlights and taillights, red-painted brake callipers and a high-gloss finish for the wing mirrors and the fins on the bonnet and wings. Let's not forget that GT badge on the boot lid.

The GT versions will ride on 10-spoke alloy wheels measuring 19-inches in diameter up front and 20 inches at the back.

Inside the cabin you'll find a mixture of red and black trimmings (including red seatbelts) and the sports seats boast an embossed badge on the headrests and middle sections finished in Alcantara. AMG designo Exclusive Style leather is now available as an option on all SLS AMG models, the highlight of which is a diamond pattern on the seats and door panel inserts.

The GT will be available in both Coupé and Roadster formats. We're currently waiting to hear from MBSA about the car's possible local release.
