Remember the Mercedes-Benz Ocean Drive concept of 2007? As its name suggests, it was an unashamedly decadent open four-seater, based on the S-Class chassis, ideally suited to the California version of La Dolce Vita.

Well, according to Dr Uwe Ernstberger (and he should know, he's the programme manager for the S-Class) the next-generation S-Class will include a production version of the Ocean Drive, as well as a long-wheelbase “Super S” that will take over from the Maybach and a two-door coupé that will replace the current CL-Class - wait 'til AMG get their hands on that one!

Oh, and an “ordinary” S-Class sedan as well.

“The S-Class is the best luxury car in the world,” he said. “and we have many surprises in terms of technology for the new model.

“It will deliver something very different to its rivals - and it will have a much broader range.”
