Johannesburg - Mitsubishi has added some extra flavour to its ASX compact crossover for 2015 with a few subtle design changes and new features.
While all models gain some extra sprinklings of chrome inside and out, as well as new black roof rails and tinted windows, the middle and top versions (GLS and GLX) receive snazzy new 17-inch alloy wheels and new LED daytime running lights. As the accompanying pictures show, a bright new colour, called Lighting Blue, has been added to the mix.
The only real change on the mechanical front is that the optional CVT gearbox has been reworked to improve operational smoothness and bolster efficiency. The five-speed manual gearbox remains unchanged, as does the 110kW/197Nm 2-litre normally aspirated petrol engine that drives the front wheels.
With prices starting just a few bob short of R300 000, the ASX is positioned perhaps a little too close for comfort to larger and more modern crossovers like the Ford Kuga and Toyota RAV4.
FULLY LOADED
Yet if you like all the specification toppings then this solidly-made Japanese crossover might just make a case for itself on your wish list as all three versions are loaded with more kit than you'd expect.
Even the basic GL version has cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers, a leather-covered multi-function steering wheel, rear park assist, six-speaker audio system, 16-inch alloys and seven airbags.
Stretch your way to the GLX and (as they say in the infomercials) you also receive leather seats (heated up front, powered for the driver), a panoramic glass roof, a touch-screen audio system and reverse camera. Even more indulgent is the range-topping GLS, with its nine-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system, which is standard on the manual but optional on the CVT version. The GLS is also set apart by HID headlights, Active Stability Control and Hill Start Assist.
It might be lacking a little on the performance front, but the ASX is a solidly-made and reasonably refined little crossover that offers a lavish spread of features for the money.
