Berlin, Germany - Opel is working on a modern rendition of the athletic two-seater GT, one of the prettiest cars ever to carry the lightning-bolt emblem, Germany's Autobild magazine reports.

Opel boss Karl-Thomas Neumann announced the development in a short video in which he said, “You will see both Vauxhall and Opel with fresh eyes.” The shape of the new car was not shown.

More details have been promised for later this month and a concept version is set to be unveiled at the Geneva car show in March.

The production version of the Opel GT, assuming it gets the green light, is likely to be based on the new Astra platform.

The GM subsidiary is best known for solid family and compact saloons. Yet Neumann is promising that Opel’s new concept car is something that most people “would not have expected from the brand.”

Neumann's enthusiasm for the project rose after he bought a restored example of the coveted original Opel GT, which ceased production in 1973 after only five years, according to Autobild.
