Peugeot's all-new 108 takes over from the 107 as the brand's smallest car, while also taking a step upmarket and adding a tad more flair to the mix.

Due in South Africa towards the end of 2014, the 108 is offered in two distinct body styles: the 108 Hatchback and the 108 Top, although the latter is basically a hatchback with a retractable fabric roof.

While it's taken a rather conservative design approach, in line with the latest 308, the 108 does add some potential for uniqueness - if that's your kind of thing - with a wide range of styling personalisation options.

Depending on the grade chosen, the 108 comes with a seven-inch touch-screen with 'Mirror Screen' functionality that that can connect to the applications on your smart-phone, or at least the ones that are compatible for use in a vehicle. Essentially the car's touch-screen becomes a mirror image of your phone. Depending on the operating system in question, occupants will also be able to operate their apps via voice command.

Other available niceties that have trickled down from higher segments include automatic climate control and a starter button.

Given that it's a city car with a frugal role ahead of it, engineers have kept the kerb weight down to just 840kg and there are two three-cylinder petrol engines to choose between: a 1-litre VTi with 51kW and a 1.2-litre VTi that's credited with 61kW.
