Subaru boxer engines have a distinctive sound all their own - and that's what you'll hearing, multiplied by several hundred, at the Subaru Owners Club of South Africa's fifth annual performance get-together on Saturday 8 February at Zwartkops Raceway south of Pretoria.

Scoobyfest 2014 is set to be the biggest yet, with drag races, track trials, skidpan duels and a hillclimb adding up to lots of excitement for Subaru drivers and fun for spectators - who are defined for this purpose as petrolheads who do not yet own a Subaru!

But there's a serious side to it as well.

Subaru SA marketing manager Ashley Lazarus explained: “Much of Subaru's inherent safety technology is related to our high-performance, all-wheel drive set-up.

“An event such as Scoobyfest allows owners to explore its capabilities under controlled conditions, pushing their cars' performance envelopes way further than would be safe or legal on the street.

“Our involvement not only strengthens our bond with the people who love our cars but also underlines our support of safe driving on the roads and fun on the track.”

Supercharged BRZ on the skidpan.

Star of the show will be a Subaru BRZ automatic that's been fitted with a supercharger by Rob Green Motorsport, amping up its power output from the standard 154kW to a fire-breathing 231kW at 0.6 bar of boost, with torque up from 205Nm to a meaty 315Nm.

Even Lazarus was impressed.

“The supercharged BRZ is a real blast to drive; it's not only faster, it's more fun as well - especially on the skidpan!

The Rob Green crew will be offering skidpan demos to interested buyers and enthusiasts looking to get seriously sideways. The RGM supercharger conversion costs R75 000, and the installation is guaranteed for six months or 20 000km, whichever comes first.

STI UP FOR GRABS

The Mamelodi Church of Christ will be holding a raffle with the grand prize of a brand new 2013 Subaru WRX STI being given away to one extremely lucky entrant in March. The 2.5-litre WRX STI, rated at 221kW and 407Nm, is unequivocally Subaru's performance flagship.

Proceeds from the raffle will be used to help build a new church facility that will serves the Mamelodi community through various feeding schemes and charitable initiatives.

Club chairperson Nadia Singh said: “Scoobyfest caters for absolutely all Subarus from the functional Outback to highly-modified WRX STI's that take part on the day, bringing together owners and enthusiasts alike in the common passion for the Southern Cross badge.”

The action will start at 8am, and entry for spectators will be free.
