The strength of the BMW M4 Coupé is evident in every detail.
Ever since the Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ broke cover, petrolheads have been asking when it was going to get more power than the initial 147kW - i.e. when its Subaru-based two-litre flat-four boxer engine was going to get a turbo.
Well, it's possible the answer is, never.
GT 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has been quoted in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald as saying that Toyota is testing an 86 with a bigger engine. He confirmed that it had tried both turbo and superchargers on the two-litre mill, but that Toyota would probably go for a 2.5-litre, naturally-aspirated engine developing a conservative 184kW - a 25 percent improvement.
The Herald also quoted Tada as saying that a second-generation rear-wheel drive sports coupé was already under development, but that it could be 'radically different', maybe even with an inline engine - which is cheaper and lighter since it has only one cylinder head.
Where that would leave the orphaned Scooby BRZ we don't know, unless Subaru keep it going as a competitor to the GT 86 MkII, possibly with a turbocharged two-litre lump - giving the petrolheads the best of both worlds.
