The ultimate GTI fantasy will move beyond the hatchback realm when Volkswagen pulls the covers off its GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo concept at the Worthersee Festival in Austria on 28 May.

Although it was designed for the PlayStation Gran Turismo game, VW has created a real-life concept to show off and although no actual images have been released as yet, these official design sketches paint a clear enough picture of the ground-hugging roadster with its low-cut windscreen.

The fantasy roadster promises manic performance from its 3-litre twin-turbo VR6 TSI engine that pushes 375kW and 665Nm. Performance figures have yet to be divulged, but its maker describes it as "ferociously fast" and that's not something we're going to doubt.

The engine is mated to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel drive system to keep the sports car's road manners relatively tidy.

Also helping in that regard are a set of 20-inch alloy wheels, a massive rear wing, race-car-style front splitter and integrated rear diffuser. The braking system is fit for a supercar, with vented discs measuring 15 inches in diameter at the front and 14 inches at the rear.

According to VW, the concept: "uses the Golf GTI Design DNA to create a strong sporting statement, with distinctive horizontal graphics."
