Wörthersee, Austria - When the no-nonsense special projects technicians at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles were invited to “make some noise” at the 2014 Wörthersee GTI festival, everybody expected them to shoehorn some improbably muscular big-bore engine (with straight-through auspuff, of course) into a delivery van or pick-up truck.
What they did was to recruit a gorgeous blonde DJ and get her to drive the Amarok Power concept - almost certainly the loudest exhibit at this year's GTI rally.
This unique Ama-Rockin' bakkie comes complete with a 5000-watt sound system, including deck space for the DJ, that's not only fully portable, but can also be set up and packed away by one not very large person, thanks to dedicated rolling pallets mounted in the load bed.
The truck also lives up to its hard-rock persona with special metallic grey paint containing micro glass flakes to intensify the shine. Side-mirror housings and the in-your-face 22” alloys are finished in a lighter grey, highlighted by orange-painted brake callipers and decals.
Bi-xenon headlights with chrome inserts and chrome-plated dual tailpipes add a bit of bling, while the inside is tricked out in black and orange nappa leather, with steering wheel, bucket seats and door trim in black alcantara synthetic suede (complete with special laser-etched seat fabric graphics) and carbon-fibre trim elements on other panels.
THE HOT SET-UP
Those rolling pallets house one of the loudest portable sound systems ever built. The centrepiece is an Allen & Heath Xone:92 with two Pioneer CDJ900NXS decks and amplifiers from MC², driving two Void Acoustics Impulse 3t speakers, designed and built specifically for this application, as was the Stasys Xair subwoofer.
The six smaller Void Acoustics speakers that do duty as monitors are integrated into dedicated functional sound boxes, and all the components have been designed in such a way that when packed they exactly fill the cargo bed of the Amarok.
The final weekend of the annual Wörthersee GTI festival is always a party of note - and this is one custom truck that's guaranteed to get visitors to the rally really rocking.
