Uitenhage - Those shopping at the lower end of the VW T5 Kombi range now have a seven-speed DSG option to consider.

Previously the double-clutch gearbox was only available in the long-wheelbase and Comfortline versions, but now VW is offering a short-wheelbase Trendline DSG model to tempt buyers seeking a more affordable self-shifter.

The seven-speed gearbox has a particularly long seventh gear ratio that operates as an overdrive for quite and efficient highway cruising.

All T5 Kombi models offer seating for eight and power provided by VW's familiar 2-litre TDI turbodiesel engine that develops 103kW and 350Nm. Claimed (laboratory) fuel consumption amounts to 8.0 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.

Standard features in the Trendline model include an eight-speaker CD/MP3 audio system, front and rear aircon, remote central locking, dual airbags and ESP stability control. Also standard is a five-year/60 000km maintenance plan.
