The pre-Geneva show leaking extravaganza continues with the surfacing of official pictures of Volvo's new V40.

Volvo is still remaining tight-lipped about the specifics of this vehicle ahead of its unveiling next week but the rumour mill has it that the new wagoney-hatchish-thingamabob will replace the V50, S40 and C30 all in one go.

It's certainly not out of the question, though, that Volvo might develop sedan and three-door hatch versions of the V40 to replace the latter two.

Said to measure 4500mm in length, the V50 is slightly longer than an Audi A3 Sportback (4292mm), Ford Focus hatch (4358mm) and Volvo S40 (4476).

A SHRUNKEN V60?

Looks-wise, it is a continuation of the theme we've seen playing out in the latest S60 and V60, with rather innocuous headlights leading into a generously sized and angled grille and a rear-end with a black panel extending downwards from the glass and L-shaped taillights digging into the rear fenders.

No word on the engine options yet, but it's obvious that the lower-end turbocharged petrol and diesel engines from the S60 will make an appearance in this car.

Most likely candidates are the 110kW and 132kW 1.6 turbopetrols and 120kW 2-litre turbodiesel, although a bunch of smaller engines will also be needed to plug the bottom end of the range.
