National traffic authorities have instructed all provincial traffic departments to implement the controversial driver-demerit point system from 1 April.

But the Johannesburg metro police department, which has been charged with one of the pilot runs of the road system, says there are still too many administrative problems that need clearing up before it can be used.

The Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) law uses a demerit points system that penalises motorists every time they get a fine.

On 18 January, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) wrote to traffic authorities, saying the Aarto national rollout would start in April.

Joburg traffic chief Chris Ngcobo plans to meet RTMC chief executive officer Collins Letsoalo before next week to discuss how the teething problems will delay the planned launch.
