Johannesburg – Another 70 licensing officials at the City of Johannesburg’s motor vehicle licensing centres have been suspended following the release of a report highlighting fraud and corruption.

Mayoral committee member for public safety Michael Sun has appealed to members of the public wanting to renew their vehicle licenses to be patient as many of the centres are now understaffed.

“Services are likely to be affected at all of the licensing and some testing stations in Johannesburg including Midrand, Randburg, Marlboro, Roodepoort, Langlaagte and Martindale. However, temporary staff will be used to fill vacancies quickly where it is possible.

“We request the residents to be patient whilst we are working towards a corruption free city,” he said.

This follows eight arrests made earlier in January, of the first of some 106 suspected fraudsters to date.

The city has estimated that it has lost as much as R14.7 million through these fraudulent transactions.
