Bentley may build its new luxury off-roader in Bratislava rather than Britain.
In a blow to its 4000-strong British workforce, the firm’s German bosses have announced they’re considering manufacturing the £150 000 (R2 million) 4x4 in the Slovakian capital.
The final decision is expected to be made within weeks, with hundreds of new jobs riding on the decision.
BENTLEY DNA
The bombshell means it would be the first volume-produced Bentley to be built outside of the UK in its near 100-year history. And it could not carry the plate that has adorned generations for Bentleys: ‘Made in Crewe, England’.
Volkswagen insist it would still have ‘Bentley DNA’ but would most likely have a plaque saying instead: ‘Designed in Crewe, England’.
Critics say WO Bentley, who founded the firm 94 years ago, would be turning in his grave along with generations of ‘Bentley Boys’ who treasure the car-maker. - Daily Mail
